We can learn lessons from our past, but with a warning: The
past also carries with it our past perceptions, our past selves. These may no
longer be helpful or relevant. The past does not ever have to equal the future.
Therefore, we are free to change our future.
We don't actually carry the past with us, but rather our
perceptions of the past. Our perceptions are based on our beliefs at the time, and
often are less than accurate memories. Reality fades and only shadows
remain.
We fear the shadows, the feelings, the perceptions that we
carry with us. Fear comes from either the past or worry of the future. Shadows
and specters of the future can not hurt us. They do not have any power except
what we give them with our attention. Neither are here in the present moment.
In the present we are free to choose our thoughts, our feelings and our actions.
Right here in this moment we are free. Free from the past, free from the
future, free to make different choices.

Always remember: The Past does NOT equal The Future!
